Bergamo

Bergamo Alta is the oldest and most picturesque part of Bergamo, situated on a hill above the city’s modern buildings. The historic center has preserved its medieval street layout, stone squares, towers, churches, and palaces, making a stroll through it feel like a journey back in time. The entire area is surrounded by the massive Venetian Walls, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017 as part of the ancient fortifications of the Venetian Republic.

The heart of Bergamo Alta is Piazza Vecchia, an elegant square surrounded by historic buildings. Here you’ll find the Palazzo della Ragione, Palazzo Nuovo, and the Civic Tower, also known as the Campanone, which offers views of the rooftops of the old town and the surrounding hills. Nearby is Piazza del Duomo, where you can see the Cathedral of St. Alexander, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the ornate Renaissance Cappella Colleoni. The charm of the historic center is further enhanced by its narrow cobblestone streets, small squares, cafés, artisan shops, and numerous viewpoints.

During our walk, we will also climb San Vigilio Hill, which offers a view of Bergamo Alta.

We will sample local specialties: casoncelli and the polenta e osei dessert.
